I have several AR pattern rifles and I have several manufacturers/lots of surplus/commercial ammo that I was running thru them and expecting better accuracy then I was getting. I know that there are stated accuracy standards and velocities for issue and commercial ammo. This is paired with all the various bullets weights that are now in the system. I do handload and like working up loads, however I wanted a way to dial in the gun to the round using the surplus ammo I had. Few people read what the test barrel that those "on the box" values were generated with. Different velocities and bullet weights will change the point of impact, regardless of what the internet tells you. I have read stories and seen interviews with guys shooting 03A3, Enfields, M14s and such, that had bayonets on them, that shot lights out when attached. I have seen the same today with guys having platforms that shoot 2-3 inches at best until you put a suppressor on them and then sub moa all day with issue ammo. That got me remembering "The Boss" from when i was a poor enlisted guy in the early 90s. The intent of "The Boss (Browning Ballistic Optomized Shooting System)" was a muzzle attachment that you could adjust to dampen the barrel harmonics and match the barrel to the round, and not handload a round to the barrel.
So being the hard head that I am, I looked at the ARs, I know what the thread patterns were and headed to the hardware store in town. Since I knew what the device looked like back in the day, I bought a couple of coupling nuts. Since 1/2x28 is not a local store tap size, I bought a larger coupling nut and found a die that would let me thread the outside of my flash hider and screw it onto that while I waited or the 1/2x28 to arrive. I grabbed a couple mags of green tips and went out to the barn. I can shoot at 100 yards outside and 125 from inside the barn at my house. Before modding the flash hider I shot 3 - 5 round groups at different 1" round targets. I did not slow fire these, I didnt clean between groups or let it cool down per se in between. I have a bench, a caldwell sled with velcro strap, and I scoped it with a 2x8 firedot luepold turned way down. Without putting a bunch of torque or pressure on the gun, I would look thru the scope with as little check as needed and fingerthe trigger with no thumb wrap, would sight, inhale, exhale squeeze, inhale, exhale squeeze as fast as the dot covered the dot. I then threaded up the flash hider, dotted it up on the flats for 5.5 possible settings. I then laid out freezer paper and ran the settings 5 rounds per across the paper. The first three groups "as issued" had 4 to 6 inch groups. Not only did the POI change on the round the horn settings, just like with handloading, you could watch the barrel start to tune in. After I went around the horn, I chose the 2 best groups of number settings, and set new targets and fired 10 rounds at each setting. For a 12 dollar hardware store solution the results were unbelievable, the 4 to 6 inch groups had gone down to 2 to 3 inch groups for 10 rounds. I am a "show don't tell" guy so i will publish those strings of fire and velocities on this site. you can interpret them how you like.,
